One Last Word – The Book
Nikki Grimes has truly gifted readers with One Last Word, a collection of poetry which features poems from the African-American artistic boom of the early 20th century as well as Grimes’ original modern day pieces inspired by the period. She uses a poetic form called the “golden shovel,” which extracts a line from a poem to create a new poem composed of words from that line. Stunning illustrations, Grimes’ golden shovels, and poetry by whom she refers to as the “literary lights” of the Harlem Renaissance — Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, Gwendolyn Bennett, and the like — meet in this extraordinary work of art.
