Nature Anatomy: The Curious Parts and Pieces of the Natural World by Julia Rothman is a beautiful mix of science and art, featuring drawings and diagrams on a wide range of topics. Whimsical illustrations move the reader through the layers of the earth, the atmosphere, water ecosystems, offering an up-close look at the anatomy of insects and land and sea creatures including bees, butterflies, birds, and trees. There are sections on leaf and tree identification, phases of the moon, tides, constellations, and so much more.
In the introduction, Rothman, a self-proclaimed “city dweller,” shares how her own curiosity of nature — even in the midst of the big city — inspired the book, along with brushes of nostalgia from childhood beach and camping trips. She lives in the heart of Brooklyn, NY near the gem that is Prospect Park and she invites us in to her nature journey — her questions, observations, and curiosities. It’s a nature memoir that stirs up and challenges the way we think of and perceive the world around us.
I think this is important to note because when we think about science and nature, so much is about our discovery and perspective. Rothman writes,
“It’s a continuous lifelong project for us to appreciate our surroundings, whatever they may be, and this book is just a tiny piece of evidence of that. I hope our book inspires you to be curious about your own backyard, too, whether it’s rolling hills or a flower box on a fire escape.”
Nature Anatomy is must have for nature enthusiasts, young and old. I’m a huge fan of gifting books for kids and this would make a fabulous birthday or baby shower gift, coupled with a magnifying glass or binoculars and a perhaps a printed scavenger hunt (see below). A scavenger hunt is a fun, interactive, and kid-friendly activity — perfect for a nature hike through the woods, science nature unit, or summer camping trip. This Nature Scavenger Hunt is available as an instant digital download on Etsy or Teachers Pay Teachers — simply grab the digital file, print any of the 3 sizes on brown kraft paper or card stock, and GO! Alternately, you can request prints or a custom made kit (includes prints, clipboards, and twig pencils) for a child’s birthday party or camp/classroom activity. Send your custom request through the Live.Read.Write. shop.
More details on the hunt here and how we used it for my son’s 6th birthday party.
We love this watercolor set from IKEA, which comes with paintbrushes, a cup of water, and a great of assortment of colors. What’s great about this particular set is that everything packs up nicely for on-the-go nature excursions. Add a small sketchbook and the giftee can gather specimens on a nature walk and paint his or her findings.
Add your own touch and flair with other items such as binoculars, special paper/journal, etc.
